This classic duvet (filled with cotton), which is a kind of spare winter blanket, began to be used from the 18th century.

The initial construction method was completely manual. Cotton was spinned using a bow which made it soft. Then the cotton was placed in a bag which was sewed after.
Later, a mechanism was used to spin the cotton - this was a cylinder with blades that managed the above project with manual rotation.
In 1950, the electric grating machine was used which gave the same result but much faster.

So after the cotton was spun, this was stretched on the fabric and was filled, then it was sewed at the rim and transferred to the bench to be evened by being banged with a stick. Then was decorated with designs. These designs were thought up by the manufacturer and it order to be fulfilled they were a lengthy process. But the result of this effort was the creation of an excellent product in practical use and also a masterpiece. The quilt stuffed with cotton was slowly being replaced by the blanket from 1975, and then resumed its usefulness when filled with acrylic.

Chania has to show several manufacturers of quilts created mainly in the "golden quilt era" (1945-1975), and were housed, generally in the commercial part of the city (Bettolo street) and the main representatives were Katsompenakis, Kelaidis, Malandrakis , Bikouvarakis, Potetsianakis, Fourakis and Chavredaki.

George Bikouvarakis began his activity as a manufacturer of quilts in a private area in 1946. In 1950 he created his first factory in Bettolo Street performing successful product manufacturing with the help of an grating engine and a sewing machine. The factory was then moved to 6 Skalidi street. Bikouvarakis created the products from beginning to end, and always had excellent results. The secrets of his success was the deep knowledge, an artistic flair and artistry.

Along with the construction of quilts, George Bikouvarakis also manufactured high quality mattresses. The business now deals with catering the hotel industry by manufacturing quilts, mattresses and pillows. The products are supplied to the Cretan market, with constantly emerging perspectives. The grating machine and sewing machine are now in place, in the new factory.
